Remember the trailer about the most vibrant, immersive world like never seen before? Guess what, there isn't even traffic AI, NPC's on the street don't know what to do, there is not a single thing to interact with in the city. Remember the trailer about life choices and how it will affect your entire game? Guess what, it only changes the first 15 minutes of the game. But I think I can still hear it, just about. Amidst it all, the nuance that does exist in Cyberpunk 2077, the intense, intoxicating humanity at its heart, is so nearly engulfed by all the noise. My lingering impression of Cyberpunk 2077 is of a game that's shouting over itself, relentlessly at odds with its own creative voice. Maturity in the immature sense, maybe: the teenage idea of it, that 'maturity' equals Rated M and can be found in nakedness, coarseness, blood and guts, when in actuality it's closer to something like the forced perspective gained from time. The maturity - and recall CD Projekt describing Cyberpunk, on announcement, as "a mature RPG for a mature audience" - is often not. The promised depth of systems are there, but mishandled. The story is a marvel, as is the sheer, red mist hostility of the world that houses it. Technical issues are often passing, but what lingers is the lack of readiness, in the wider sense. You come here and have a hell of a week, but then you wake up one morning feeling jaded and complicit, and you realise that the glitzy signs lead nowhere, the noise is meaningless, and when you look beyond the strip, there is only desert.

But you have to play by its rules, accepting Night City’s xenophobia and misogyny as unavoidable fictive components. The sheer size of the world, its astonishing architecture, its set-piece battles, its stylistic bravado – all are testament to the efforts of a talented workforce. Phenomenal, that's what Cyberpunk 2077 is.ĭoes Cyberpunk 2077 live up to the hype? Is it significantly deeper than Watch Dogs: Legion or Yakuza: Like a Dragon? Is it as good as Grand Theft Auto V? If you were expecting a light-hearted affair full of futuristic hijinks then you might not find what you want here – though it does let its hair down every once in a while. I'm even contemplating starting over anew to change the outcome of some events with the benefit of hindsight. Even now I'm itching to jump back in and complete yet more side jobs, not only because they're enjoyable, but also just in case they offer V more options when it comes to ending their story. It marries a gripping story with a huge open world absolutely dripping with atmosphere one in which, after fifty hours of gameplay, I still feel like I've only scratched its surface. Cyberpunk 2077 isn't perfect, but it is ambitious.
